Washington DC's Designed to Recycle project turns garbage trucks into mobile art

The Department of Public Works of Washington DC, in collaboration with the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, launched Designed to Recycle, a project that transforms garbage trucks into mobile artworks to promote recycling. Since its inception in 2010, ten trucks have been decorated by local street artists including Kellie Cox, Erin Curtis, John Deardourff, Patricia Goslee, and Yuriko Jackall. The murals feature symbols of the city, writings, and colorful designs. Chris Shorter, Director of the DC Department of Public Works, stated that art is a powerful tool to engage residents and raise awareness about environmental issues. The trucks create a connection between health authorities and citizens, and drivers are enthusiastic about operating them. An additional fifteen vehicles are planned by September 6.
