Warsaw Uprising Mound: War Debris Transformed into Public Park
Archigrest and topoScape have completed the transformation of the Warsaw Uprising Mound, a 40-meter-high artificial hill made from post-war rubble, into a public park. The mound, located in Warsaw, Poland, was used as a landfill until the 1960s and later regenerated symbolically, ecologically, and socially. In 1994, veterans erected a monument on its summit, and spontaneous vegetation created a wild forest. The design, led by architects Maciej Kaufman, Marcin Maraszek, Justyna Dziedziejko, and Magdalena Wnęk, repurposes war debris as construction material for revitalization. The project spans 83,000 m² and was completed in 2023 for the Capital City of Warsaw. Photographs by Michał Szlaga document the site.
