Warsaw Uprising Mound Park: Fourth Nature Refuge on Anthropogenic Hill

architecture-design · 2026-05-11

The Warsaw Uprising Mound Park, designed by Archigrest and topoScape, opened in 2023 on an 83,000 m² site in Warsaw, Poland. The park is built on an artificial hill formed from post-World War II debris, which was used as a landfill until the mid-1960s. Over time, the hill grew to 35 meters above the surrounding flat, marshy landscape and became overgrown with ruderal vegetation. The project transforms this anthropogenic mound into a Fourth Nature refuge, blending ecological restoration with public space. Key architects include Maciej Kaufman and Marcin Maraszek from Archigrest, and Justyna Dziedziejko and Magdalena Wnęk from topoScape. The client is the Capital City of Warsaw. Photographs were taken by Michał Szlaga.
