Warsaw's Green Transformation: Urban Parks and Riverfront Revival

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

Warsaw is undergoing a major green urban transformation, turning its central spaces into parks and pedestrian zones. The Central Square (Parade Square), once used for regime parades, is being redesigned with new plantings, lawns, and seating. The Świętokrzyski Park redesign, won by Studio Widoki Łukasz Stępnik, will green the area near the new Museum of Modern Art. Thousands of trees are being planted along Ulica Chmielna and adjacent streets. The Saxon Palace (Pałac Saski), destroyed in 1944, is set for reconstruction starting in 2026 at a cost of about €600 million, sparking debate. The city boasts around 80 green areas covering 25% of its 517 sq km surface. Historic parks like Ujazdowski (restored in early 2000s) and Łazienki (80 hectares, Royal Baths Park) are key attractions. Łazienki features the Royal Sculpture Gallery and summer Sunday Chopin concerts. The Vistula River project includes 11 bridges, a new pedestrian and cycle bridge opened recently, 5 free ferries, and 9 natural beaches. Poniatówka Beach was named best city beach in Europe in 2015. River navigation on historic boats recalls the Vistula's trade route from Krakow to Gdańsk. Climate change poses challenges: in 2024 the Vistula recorded its lowest water level in 200 years at 21 cm. The city has 820 km of cycle paths.
