Warsaw's Art and Architecture: A Guide to Poland's Resilient Capital

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Established in the 14th century as the capital of the Duchy of Masovia, Warsaw boasts a rich and intricate past. After World War II, the Old Town, known for its 18th- and 19th-century architecture, underwent significant reconstruction. The Royal Castle, which was enlarged by King Stanisław August Poniatowski, was devastated in 1945 and subsequently rebuilt between 1971 and 1984, reopening as a museum. This castle once served as the location for the Polish parliament and the 3 May 1791 constitution. The Praga district, which remained unscathed during the war, is now home to vibrant street art and the Neon Museum. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier commemorates battles such as Ancona and Monte Cassino. Meanwhile, the National Museum's exhibition "Corsets Off," running until 10 September, showcases the works of 19th-century Polish women sculptors alongside Camille Claudel.
