Warsaw Emerges as Art Collecting Hub with Growing Market and New Fair

Poland's economy surpassed Switzerland to become the world's 20th largest in 2026, with over $1 trillion annual output, fueling an art market that barely existed 20 years ago. Warsaw now hosts Art Warsaw, an independent fair held from May 21-24 at the dilapidated 19th-century Villa Róż, formerly the British Embassy. The fair attracted 56 galleries, including 22 Polish ones like Raster and Foksal, alongside international dealers from Vienna, Tokyo, Berlin, and London. Prices were low, with works by Mirosław Bałka at €150,000 and Monika Falkus paintings up to €25,000. Attendance reached about 11,000 with free entry. Major collectors include Jerzy Starak, who commissioned Renzo Piano to renovate a 17th-century palace, and Artur and Mitra Dela. Grażyna Kulczyk established Muzeum Susch in Switzerland. The Museum of Modern Art, designed by Thomas Phifer and inaugurated in 2024, now hosts a Julie Mehretu exhibition. The art trade is lobbying to reduce Poland's 23% VAT. Warsaw Gallery Weekend, now in its 16th year, brings together 50 galleries in late September. The fair benefited from the closure of Vienna Contemporary.
