Warhol's Sixty Last Suppers Debuts in Italy at Museo del Novecento
Thirty years after Andy Warhol's historic exhibition of works inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper at Palazzo delle Stelline in Milan, the Museo del Novecento pays homage to the Pop Art pioneer with a display of the monumental work Sixty Last Suppers (10m x 3m) in the spectacular Sala Fontana, on view until May 18. This is the first time the piece has been presented in Italy. Warhol approached the Last Supper through reworkings of the original, including souvenirs, commercial images, and a black-and-white reproduction of a well-known 19th-century engraving. From this material, he generated nearly 100 variations on the theme—silkscreen paintings, prints, and works on paper—among them Sixty Last Suppers, his final project before his death in 1987.
