Warhol-Capote Recordings Become Theater Piece in Cambridge
Eighty hours of audio recordings capturing intimate conversations between Andy Warhol and Truman Capote, made between 1977 and 1980, have been rediscovered and adapted into a stage production titled 'WarholCapote.' The recordings were originally intended as the basis for a Broadway script but were shelved after Capote's death in 1984. Director Rob Roth uncovered their existence through a cryptic reference in Warhol's diaries. The play, directed by Michael Mayer, features Stephen Spinella as Warhol and Dan Butler as Capote. It premieres on September 10 at the American Repertory Theatre's Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, running through October 13. The production is supported by the Andy Warhol Foundation and the Truman Capote Trust. Warhol himself was dissatisfied with the recordings, writing in his diary: 'I talked too much. I ruined everything. I should have just shut up.' The play dramatizes four conversations between the two cultural icons, set against the backdrop of New York's Studio 54 era.
