institutional · 2026-04-26

The Warburg Institute in London has completed a £14.5 million renovation, reopening with expanded facilities including the Kythera Gallery, its first public exhibition space. The project, designed by Haworth Tompkins (Stirling Prize winners), added the Hinrich Reemtsma Auditorium (140 seats), the Wohl Reading Room for special collections, and upgraded digital infrastructure. The institute, founded by Aby Warburg and relocated to London in 1933 to escape Nazi persecution, houses 360,000 volumes and 400,000 photographs. The reopening exhibition 'Memory and Migration' features Warburg's notebook from his American journey, a panel from his Mnemosyne Atlas, and photographs by Tereza Červeňová. Future exhibitions include 'Tarot: Origins and Afterlives' (Jan 31–Apr 30, 2025) and 'Black Atlas' curated by Edward George. The institute also launched residency and commission programs for contemporary artists and writers.
