War Painters: Laura Scarpa's Graphic Novel on Art and WWI

publication · 2026-05-04

Laura Scarpa's graphic novel 'War Painters (1915-1918). Come l’arte salva dalla guerra' explores the intersection of art and World War I through three narratives. The first story depicts an Austrian war painter on the Dolomite front, offering a rare perspective from the enemy side. The second focuses on American sculptor Anna Coleman Ladd, who created prosthetic masks for disfigured soldiers in France. The third narrative highlights how music bridged enemy lines. The book includes historical essays by Maurizio Lucchi on wartime postcards and by Scarpa on Ladd's sculptures and trench songs. Published by ComicOut in Rome in 2018, the 96-page volume features a horizontal format and is reviewed by Ferruccio Giromini. Scarpa drew inspiration from Claudio Rigon's 'I fogli del Capitano Michel', conversations with journalist Maurizio Lucchi, and a collaboration with David Lloyd's online magazine 'Aces Weekly'.
