Wang Yancheng's 'Luce energia infinito' at Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze for Michelangelo's 550th
Wang Yancheng's exhibition 'Luce energia infinito' opened at the Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze as part of celebrations for the 550th anniversary of Michelangelo's birth. Curated by Gabriele Simongini, the show presents 18 works, including new pieces created for the occasion. Wang's abstract paintings, characterized by layered colors and gestural marks, engage in a dialogue with Michelangelo's 'Prigioni' and 'David' without attempting imitation. The artist, born in China in 1960 and residing in France for decades, draws on Chinese calligraphy, European abstraction, and American Abstract Expressionism (Pollock, Rothko). His work explores the concept of 'void' as a creative force, moving from earlier nature-inspired pieces (2018–2020, exhibited at Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna di Roma) to a more absolute, spiritual language. Simongini described the paintings as 'a material state boiling with possibility.' Wang stated that Michelangelo teaches art is a bridge to higher dimensions. The exhibition is installed in the same room as Michelangelo's 'Prigioni,' creating a resonance between the unfinished marble figures and Wang's emerging forms. The show is part of a broader program of cultural events in Florence.
