Wang Tuo Wins K21 Global Art Award 2024, Video Installation Acquired for Düsseldorf Museum

award · 2026-04-20

Chinese artist Wang Tuo has been selected as the recipient of the K21 Global Art Award 2024. The award, presented by K21 and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, recognizes emerging and mid-career artists under 45. Wang Tuo's winning work, the multi-channel video installation The Second Interrogation (2022), will be purchased and displayed at K21 starting 24 May. His practice spans film, performance, painting, and drawing, examining collective unconsciousness and historical trauma in modern Chinese and East Asian history. The artist interrogates archival materials and the boundary between fact and fiction. The Second Interrogation specifically explores tensions between artistic expression and authority under censorship. Wang Tuo was nominated by Doryun Chong, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of M+ in Hong Kong. The jury included five international museum directors and curators: Doryun Chong, Koyo Kouoh of Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town, Omar Kholeif of Sharjah Art Foundation in the UAE, Oluremi C. Onabanjo of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Jochen Volz of Pinacoteca de São Paulo. Born in Changchun in northeastern China, Wang Tuo presented a solo exhibition at Blindspot Gallery in Hong Kong last year.
