Wang Tuo Awarded Sigg Prize 2023 for Video Installation The Northeast Tetralogy
Wang Tuo, born in 1984 and based in Beijing, has been named the recipient of the Sigg Prize 2023 by M+, the global museum of contemporary visual culture located in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District. His winning work, The Northeast Tetralogy (2018–2021), is a multi-channel video installation featured in the Sigg Prize 2023 exhibition, which runs until 14 January 2024 and includes pieces by five other shortlisted artists. The prize, now in its second edition after first being awarded to Samson Young in 2020, aims to support artists from the Greater China region and includes a cash award of HKD 500,000 (£50,000). Each of the other shortlisted artists—Jes Fan, Miao Ying, Xie Nanxing, Trevor Yeung, and Yu Ji—will receive HKD 100,000 (£10,000). In the Autumn issue of ArtReview Asia, Yongwoo Lee described Wang Tuo's practice, which encompasses film, performance, painting, and drawing, as weaving together diverse times, spaces, fiction, mythology, archives, memory, and political turmoil.
