Wang Nanming Appointed Director of Shanghai Himalayas Museum
Wang Nanming has been appointed as the new director of the Shanghai Himalayas Museum. An independent curator, artist, and critic, he has actively supported avant-garde, 'post-avant-garde,' and 'metavant-garde' movements in contemporary Chinese art. Since the early 2000s, his focus has been on challenging performance art, installation, and photography, reflecting a shift from aesthetic debates to sociopolitical commentary within China's art community. From 2007 to 2009, Wang was the editor-in-chief of Art Focus and Art Time and has taught at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. He co-curated the four-part exhibition CURRENT: Contemporary Art from Scotland with Sophia Yadong Hao since 2015. Wang's publications include Understanding Modern Calligraphy and Art Must Die. In his new position, he aims to introduce a 'Young Thinker Residency' to promote self-reflection among young artists and enhance public involvement while replacing in-house curatorial roles with independent curators and critics.
