Walker Evans's Dual Exhibitions at Palazzo Magnani, Reggio Emilia

Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia presents two exhibitions on Walker Evans (1903–1975) as part of the official circuit of Fotografia Europea for the first time. 'Walker Evans. Italia,' curated by Laura Gasparin, features about fifty photographs including works by Italian photographers Ghirri, Basilico, Barbieri, and Guidi, to illustrate Evans's influence on Italian photography. Some of his images had already appeared clandestinely in 1939 in the magazine Corrente with a review by Alberto Lattuada. The exhibition shows the correspondence between Evans and Italian authors but fails to match the breadth that Evans's fortune in Italy would require. 'Walker Evans. Anonymous,' curated by David Campany, Jean-Paul Deridder, and Sam Stourdzé, examines his editorial work, displaying entire reportages for which he wrote texts and designed layouts, making him a pioneer of editing and graphic design. He traveled across the United States with his Contax 35mm camera, capturing everyday life. The series 'Many are Called,' begun in 1938 and published in 1966, includes clandestine subway portraits taken with a hidden camera. 'Labor Anonymous' continues his immersion in daily life, approaching people on their way to work. The exhibitions run until July 10, 2016, with a catalog published by Silvana Editoriale.
