Walid Raad and Artists Launch Fundraisers for Beirut After Devastating Explosion

After the devastating explosions in Beirut on 4 August, which resulted in at least 220 fatalities and 7,000 injuries, artist Walid Raad is spearheading a fundraising initiative through Mophradat, a Belgian non-profit where he serves as board president. The blasts, triggered by ignited ammonium nitrate, caused extensive damage amounting to billions and left 300,000 individuals without homes, significantly affecting cultural institutions. The raised funds will aid Lebanese artists and organizations impacted by the disaster. Mophradat emphasized the importance of transparency in fund allocation while addressing ongoing issues like missing persons and shortages. Other efforts include the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, a print sale by Gulf Photo Plus for the Lebanese Red Cross, and Art Relief 4 Beirut, featuring over 60 photographers and collaborative works by prominent artists.
