Wagner's Ring Cycle: Contrasting Productions in Aix-en-Provence and Valencia

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

In 2007, two major productions of Wagner's Ring cycle offered radically different interpretations. At the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, director Stéphane Braunschweig presented a minimalist, psychologically focused staging of Die Walküre, performed in the new Grand Théâtre de Provence with the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle. The production emphasized intimate drama, with reduced video and a focus on the father-daughter conflict between Wotan and Brünnhilde. Meanwhile, in Valencia, the Catalan collective La Fura dels Baus, led by Carlus Padrissa, staged a spectacular, technologically extravagant version of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre at the Palau de les Arts, with Zubin Mehta conducting the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana. Their production featured 3D video, elaborate machinery, and fantastical imagery, creating a total spectacle. Both productions showcased exceptional casts, including Willard White, Eva Maria Westbroek, and Mikhail Petrenko in Aix, and Juha Uusitalo, Jennifer Wilson, and Franz-Josepf Kapellmann in Valencia. The series continued in 2008 with Siegfried in both venues.
