Wagner Museum in Venice to Join MUVE Network by 2027

institutional · 2026-04-24

The Wagner Museum in Venice will become the 14th institution of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia (MUVE) by 2027, following a March 2026 agreement between MUVE, the Casino di Venezia, and the Richard Wagner Association. Housed in the Ca' Vendramin Calergi palace on the Grand Canal, the museum occupies the rooms where Richard Wagner died in 1883. Founded in 1995, it has operated with limited hours and visibility due to its location within the Casino. The new arrangement will grant MUVE management of the spaces and collections, which include the Josef Lienhart and Walter Just holdings, making it one of the largest private Wagner collections outside Bayreuth. The transition follows thirty years of discussions and will involve studies of spaces, collections, and mediation strategies before full operational integration.
