exhibition · 2026-04-23

In Doha, Qatar, the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art is set to unveil 'Wafa al-Hamad: Sites of Imagination,' marking the first extensive museum exhibition dedicated to the influential Qatari artist, educator, and designer Wafa al-Hamad (1964–2012). This showcase includes 23 pieces from the Mathaf Permanent Collection, featuring a variety of media such as watercolour, oil painting, woodwork, and digital art, as well as archival documents. Al-Hamad's work fuses calligraphy, optical illusions, abstraction, and three-dimensional elements, merging traditional influences with modern interpretations. The exhibition also examines how global modern art and abstraction impacted her artistic vision, alongside the Qatari and Gulf traditions that informed her work. Lina Ramadan served as the guest curator, with the press release provided by Qatar Museums.
