Vuoto Futuro workshop tackles industrial reuse at Ex Lanificio Carotti in Fermignano

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

The second edition of Vuoto Futuro, a series of itinerant workshops curated by Samuel Cima, director of Il Bugiardino, will take place from July 18 to 21 at the Ex Lanificio Carotti in Fermignano, in the province of Pesaro-Urbino, Marche. The initiative aims to explore new practices for inhabiting former industrial spaces, focusing on reuse and architectural heritage valorization. Four architecture studios—AM3 Architetti Associati, BDR Bureau, ErranteArchitetture, and Warehouse of Architecture and Research—will lead the workshops. A related exhibition, organized by Il Bugiardino in collaboration with the Fondazione Ex Lanificio Carotti, will run from July 21 to September 13, featuring projects by Atelier Poem, Studio Form_a, Terrapreta, Vacuum Atelier, and contributions from alleventitré and fragment.is. The exhibition, curated by ScartoStudio (founded in 2024), uses construction materials supplied by B&M costruzioni&restauri to ensure zero environmental impact. The Ex Lanificio Carotti has a history dating back to a 15th-century paper mill, later a ducal property, then a spinning mill under the Carotti family until the 1990s. It was purchased by Giovanni Pagliardini in 2006 and is now owned by Megawatt srl, which recently restored it. The oldest building, originally the 15th-century ducal paper mill, includes a hydroelectric plant still operating with early 20th-century machinery.
