Vulture Photography Contest Winners Showcase Nature's Unsung Heroes

The winners of the Vulture Interactions Photography Contest, organized by International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD), have been revealed. The overall award went to Thomas Remmits for his striking photograph of a young Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) on alert as a Common Raven (Corvus corax) flies nearby in Spain. IVAD pointed out the competitive dynamics between ravens and vultures over carrion, highlighting their mix of caution and rivalry. Regional winners from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe were also recognized, including Heather Morris and Anastasov, who depicted various vulture behaviors. The contest aims to raise awareness about vultures' crucial role as obligate scavengers in preventing disease. IVAD expressed gratitude to all participants, emphasizing the need to shift perceptions of vultures beyond their scavenging image. Winning photos, including one by Asia's Narendra Shrivastava, are showcased on IVAD's website.
