VULCANA Festival Brings Site-Specific Art to Stromboli Island
The first edition of VULCANA, a multidisciplinary open-air festival, will take place on the island of Stromboli from July 10 to 13, 2025. Conceived by Manuela Morandi, promoter of the Premio Stromboli, and curated by Luca Lo Pinto, the festival invites 21 artists to create site-specific works after a brief residency. Collaborating institutions include the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation and the TAGLI artist residency, organized by Alvise and Ilaria Baia Curioni, which has supported artists, musicians, and performers on Stromboli since 2021. Venues include an amphitheater built in the 1980s with views of Strombolicchio, the Canonica of the Church of San Bartolo, and Casa Carrubo, once home to artist Giovanni Anselmo. Participating artists include Tony Cokes, Hanne Lippard (in collaboration with composer Renato Grieco), Beatrice Gibson & Nick Gordon, Pauline Curnier-Jardin, John Menick, and the duo VEGA (Francesca Pionati and Tommaso Arnaldi). Other artists featured are Alessandro Cicoria, Emiliano Maggi, Giorgio Orbi, Michele Ferrari, and Valerie Giampietro. Musical acts include VIPRA (Fede Proietti) of HyperLento, Napoli Segreta, Industria Indipendente with KUKII, and Villa Lontana Records. The festival's visual identity was designed by Nathalie Du Pasquier, a historic member of the Memphis collective. All events are free and open to the public, blending scheduled and improvised moments.
