Von Lintel Gallery's 2003 Exhibition Explores Abstraction in Photography Through Sixteen Artists

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From February 6 to March 22, 2003, Von Lintel Gallery in New York hosted "Abstraction in Photography," showcasing the works of sixteen artists divided into three thematic categories. This exhibition explored the ways in which photography can abstract concepts of time and space. In the front gallery, familiar subjects were presented in unconventional manners, highlighted by Andres Serrano's 1989 Cibachrome piece "Bloodscape V." The middle gallery featured non-objective abstract works, including Roland Fischer's 2002 "Lucas Ave. L. A." and Sean Scully's twelve-part series "Art Horizon III" from the same year. The final section included camera-less creations, such as Winfred Evers's 1998 gelatin silver prints and Vik Muniz's Cibachrome "After Yves Klein," delving into themes of optical illusion and the commercialization of art. The exhibition posited that photography is inherently an abstraction of reality.
