Voluspa Jarpa presents decolonial project Altered Views for Chilean Pavilion at 2019 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Voluspa Jarpa, a Chilean artist, will showcase her project Altered Views at the Chilean Pavilion in the Arsenale during the Venice Biennale, which runs from May 11 to November 24, 2019. This work represents a 15-year endeavor focused on decolonization, utilizing declassified U.S. intelligence documents related to Latin America from the Cold War era. It explores geopolitical conflicts and challenges colonial viewpoints, highlighting the interdependence of colonizers and the colonized. The project features six European micro-narratives spanning the seventeenth to twentieth centuries, addressing issues of class, race, and gender hegemony. Jarpa was chosen through a public competition held by Chile's Ministry of Culture, with curator Agustín Pérez-Rubio managing the pavilion. She fondly recalls her initial experience arriving via the Grand Canal and a significant encounter with Giorgio Andreotta Calò's work in 2017.
