Volterra Named First Tuscan City of Culture for 2022

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

In 2022, Volterra, an ancient city of Etruscan origin located in Pisa, has been designated the inaugural Città Toscana della Cultura by the Tuscany Region, following Procida's recognition as the Italian Capital of Culture for the same year. From 2023 onwards, this title will be awarded through a formal selection process. Volterra had previously sought the title of Italian Capital of Culture in 2021, backed by over 150 associations and 52 municipalities, presenting a proposal titled 'Rigenerazione Umana' that highlighted alabaster and light. The city plans to revise its candidacy program to focus on cultural regeneration and inclusion. A significant initiative includes a theater project within Volterra prison, funded with a €1.2 million budget from the Ministry of Justice, with a tender deadline set for February 28, 2022.
