Vladan Radovanović Retrospective at Belgrade's Museum of Contemporary Art Examines Outsider Status
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade presented a retrospective of Vladan Radovanović from March 28 to September 10, 2024. Curated by Saša Janjić and Una Popović, the exhibition featured approximately 200 works spanning six decades, including painting, photography, sculpture, sound art, and video. Radovanović, born in Belgrade in 1932 and passing away in 2023, was a polymedial artist who coined terms like "Tacilism" and "Vocovisual" to describe his synthesis of media. The show highlighted his early 1958 "Mini-Actions" series, which predates similar performance art in Yugoslavia by four years. Despite his significance in Serbia, the exhibition lacked English-language promotion and a full catalog, focusing on local audiences. Works like "False Climbing" (1958) and "Prayer Breakfast Under the White Angel's Wings" (2004) explored themes of humor, body, and political critique. The retrospective, delayed since 1999 due to NATO bombing and museum renovations, positioned Radovanović as an outsider challenging contemporary art's inclusive paradigms.
