Vivian Maier retrospective opens at Musei Reali di Torino with unseen works
A major exhibition of Vivian Maier's photography opens at the Musei Reali di Torino from February 9 to June 26, 2022. Curated by Anne Morin, the show features over 250 images, many previously unseen, including color photographs and shots from her 1959 trip to Italy (Turin and Genoa). The exhibition traveled from the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. It includes sections on New York and Chicago street scenes, self-portraits, childhood (a theme linked to her work as a nanny), ten Super 8 films, two audio recordings of Maier's voice, and personal objects like her Rolleiflex and Leica cameras and a hat. Enrica Pagella, director of the Musei Reali, notes the exhibition explores the origins of Maier's street photography poetics, a theme now widely shared via social media. Morin describes Maier as an amateur photographer who found freedom in photography, now ranked alongside masters like Robert Doisneau, Robert Frank, and Helen Levitt. Maier's archives were discovered in 2007.
