Vivian Caccuri's Sonic Art Explores Colonial Legacies and Interspecies Relations
Vivian Caccuri, an artist from Rio de Janeiro, investigates the intersections of sound with bodily experiences, emotions, and sociopolitical issues. Her performance-lecture, Mosquitos Also Cry (2018), critiques colonial perspectives on hygiene and population management through the sounds of mosquitoes. This exploration is further developed in her installation, Água Parada (Still Water, 2018), which includes a mosquito net and a dance track featuring the frequencies of mosquito wingbeats. Caccuri's artistic practice blends visual art, experimental music, and anthropology, focusing on ecology and the remnants of colonialism. She has showcased her work at Galeria Leme (2015) and Progetti Gallery (2013) and participated in the 32nd São Paulo Biennial, earning the Pinchuk Future Generation Art Prize in 2017. Lucia Pietroiusti is co-curating a symposium on interspecies consciousness and will oversee the Lithuanian Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale. This article was published in ArtReview's January-February 2019 edition.
