Vittorio Sgarbi resigns as Sicily's cultural heritage assessor amid political turmoil

Vittorio Sgarbi has resigned as assessor for Cultural Heritage of the Sicily Region, ending months of conflict with Governor Nello Musumeci and the Five Star Movement. He announced his resignation during the opening of the exhibition 'Sicilië, pittura fiamminga' at Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo. Sgarbi stated he would hand over his duties to Sebastiano Tusa, the successor agreed with Gianfranco Miccichè, by Easter. The resignation follows a series of disputes, including a censure motion by the Five Star Movement over video messages Sgarbi recorded in a bathroom, and a Change.org petition that gathered over 40,000 signatures calling for his removal. Sgarbi had been appointed assessor after the November regional elections, where he initially ran for president but withdrew to support Musumeci. A pact stipulated he would leave the assessor role only if he became Minister of Cultural Heritage after the March 4 political elections, in which he was elected as a deputy. However, Musumeci reportedly pressured him to resign due to his parliamentary role. Sgarbi cited Musumeci's failure to meet with Guido Roberto Vitale, a business lawyer interested in funding the Temple G of Selinunte, as the final straw, stating he has severed all political and human ties with the governor.
