Vittorio Sgarbi proposes antimicrobial film to reopen museums

Vittorio Sgarbi, art critic, historian, parliamentarian, mayor of Sutri, and president of the Mart – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, announced the 'Membrana Culture' protective film at the press room of the Chamber of Deputies. The film, produced by the Serge Ferrari group and marketed by the Italian company GLAB of Reggio Emilia, uses patented silver ion technology to reduce viruses and bacteria by 85% within five minutes of contact and up to 99% with prolonged use, with a certified three-year lifespan. Sgarbi stated that the Mart in Rovereto is already using the film and that museums are essential services under Italian law, comparable to hospitals, transport, and schools. The proposal comes amid Sgarbi's controversial history with health regulations, including a summer ordinance in Sutri banning masks and a public altercation at the Venice Film Festival. The film could be applied to schools, gyms, public transport, bars, shops, and healthcare facilities, though its effectiveness against airborne transmission and social distancing remains unproven.
