Vittorio Sgarbi announces candidacy for Rome mayor in 2021

other · 2026-04-27

Vittorio Sgarbi, an art critic, declared his intention to run for mayor of Rome in the upcoming 2021 elections. He was born in Ferrara in 1952 and currently holds positions as President of the Canova Foundation, the MART Museum, and the Ferrara Arte Foundation, in addition to being a member of the Chamber of Deputies and the mayor of Sutri. Sgarbi will represent his "Rinascimento" movement, established in 2017, which recently achieved 5% support in the Valle d'Aosta regional elections. He has openly criticized the current mayor, Virginia Raggi, on Facebook, asserting that his candidacy will resolve the deadlock within the center-right coalition. His bid, backed by various associations and the "No euro – Italia Libera" movement, is perceived as somewhat serious, with Giorgia Meloni of Fratelli d'Italia and journalist Giletti also considering runs.
