Vittorio Gregotti, Architect of Shanghai's Italian Town and Venice Biennale Innovator, Dies at 92
Vittorio Gregotti died on 15 March 2020 after contracting COVID-19. The Italian architect designed the Città di Pujiang, an Italian-style town in Shanghai. His career began in 1952 when he wrote for Casabella after graduating from Politecnico di Milano. He later edited the magazine for eight years before founding Gregotti Associati International in 1974. Major projects from his firm include Lisbon's Belém cultural center, stadiums in Barcelona, Nîmes, Genoa, and Morocco, plus Milan's Bicocca redevelopment featuring the Arcimboldi Theatre, University of Bicocca departments, and Siemens and Pirelli headquarters. In 1976, he directed the visual arts section of the Venice Biennale, significantly incorporating architecture and design for the first time, which led to the architectural edition's establishment in 1980. He also curated the 1975 exhibition A Proposito del Mulino Stucky.
