Vitra Design Museum celebrates Ettore Sottsass centenary with 'Rebel and Poet' exhibition

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Vitra Design Museum presents 'Ettore Sottsass, rebel and poet' at the Vitra Schaudepot near Basel, marking the centenary of the Austrian-Italian designer (1917–2007). The show features about thirty key works spanning his career, from the Olivetti Valentine typewriter (1969) to Memphis Group icons like the Carlton bookcase (1981), Ashoka and Tahiti lamps (1981), and the Tartar desk (1985). Excerpts from his poetic and literary texts, along with furniture drawings for Memphis, contextualize his output. The Schaudepot, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, opened a year ago to house part of the museum's collection and temporary exhibitions. The exhibition runs from July 14 to September 24, 2017.
