Vita Vel Regula: A Lifelong Game of Envelopes and Time
Artist and curator Pablo Helguera conceived a durational participatory artwork titled Vita Vel Regula, launched in 2013 at an exhibition in Milan curated by Julia Draganović. The piece is a game involving 16 sealed envelopes given to 40 participants—20 friends and family, plus 20 strangers met at the opening. Each envelope is opened at intervals that double each time: the first on opening day, the next two days later, then four, eight, and so on, extending from days to decades. The final envelope is dated November 23, 2097, when Helguera's daughter Estela, then 4, will be 88. The work draws inspiration from Dino Buzzati's short story "The Seven Messengers," Giorgio Agamben's book The Highest Poverty, and Alighiero Boetti's 1971 embroidery predicting his own death. Helguera also wrote two letters—one to be read upon his death, another for the final envelope—addressing hypothetical future audiences. The project reflects on institutionalization of social practice, a topic Helguera explored while working at MoMA and organizing the symposium Critical Play. Participants include artist David Greg Harth, who faithfully follows the instructions. The game's structure mirrors the exponential decay of communication over time, turning the artwork into a meditation on legacy, memory, and the desire to connect across generations.
