Visionary Crazy Golf: Paul Smith, Zaha Hadid, and Tom Dixon Design Artist Golf Course for Trafalgar Square
The London Design Festival has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise £120,000 by June 7 for a temporary artist-designed golf course in Trafalgar Square. The project, called Visionary Crazy Golf, will occupy the square for one week during the festival in September and be open to the public. Curated by Paul Smith, who proposes a colorful striped structure on the steps of the National Gallery, the course includes contributions from the late Zaha Hadid (a wavy, flexible structure), Tom Dixon (a giant funnel), artist Mark Wallinger, Camille Walala, and architecture studios Atelier Bow-Wow, HAT with Tim Hunkin, NEON, and Ordinary Architecture. If crowdfunding succeeds, sponsors will cover the remaining half of the installation cost. The festival continues a decade-long tradition of public interventions in Trafalgar Square, following Jaime Hayon's giant chess set (2009) and Reed Kram and Clemens Weisshaar's robotic light show (2010).
