Visibile Award at Tate Liverpool: 25,000 Euros to Aboriginal Collective The Karrabing Film Collective

award · 2026-05-04

The third edition of the Visibile Award, curated by Matteo Lucchetti and Judith Wielander and supported by Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto and Fondazione Zegna, took place on October 31 at Tate Liverpool. The award is the first European prize recognizing socially engaged artistic practices, with a democratic, experimental, and community-oriented format. Instead of a closed-door jury, a special jury composed of artists, experts, and users of socially engaged art gathered in a public, parliamentary-style discussion lasting a full day to evaluate the relationship between art and society. The 25,000 euro prize was awarded to The Karrabing Film Collective, an Aboriginal collective from a rural village in Northern Australia, many of whom live with low or no income. They participated via Skype. Their winning project, "Salt," is a 5-minute film shot entirely with an iPhone, defining a mode of self-organization and access to contemporary art understanding, serving as a survival manual for creative and cultural metamorphosis without leaving their place of origin, highlighting the strong divide between distant social groups and geographic areas.
