Virtual exhibition marks 100 years of Florence's Galleria d'Arte Moderna
The Galleria d'Arte Moderna at Palazzo Pitti in Florence, part of the Uffizi Galleries, celebrates its centenary with a virtual exhibition. Founded on June 11, 1924, the museum houses 19th- and early 20th-century Italian art, including Macchiaioli works. The online show, curated by Elena Marconi and Chiara Ulivi, features 50 key works, historical installation photos, and texts on the collection's origins. The gallery's collection grew from Accademia delle Arti e del Disegno competition pieces and later acquisitions like Diego Martelli's 1897 bequest. Post-war, it expanded to include international artists. Recent additions include Francesco Hayez's "Ritratto del Conte Arese in carcere" and works by Adriano Cecioni, Libero Andreotti, and Manzù. The current layout, dating to the early 1970s, spans 30 rooms overlooking the Boboli Gardens.
