Virginia Mori creates poster for Pesaro 56 film festival

Virginia Mori has designed the official poster for the 56th edition of the Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema in Pesaro, running from August 22 to 29, 2020. The festival director Pedro Armocida gave Mori complete creative freedom, as this year's edition has no specific theme due to its unusual circumstances. Mori, a Pesaro native who studied in Urbino, has a longstanding connection to the festival, having previously screened her animated shorts there. Her poster features a woman's face with a modern yet 1950s-inspired hairstyle, wearing 1970s-style sunglasses that reference filmmakers Pier Paolo Pasolini and Jean-Luc Godard. From the glasses emerges a wave, symbolizing positive change and openness. Mori deliberately avoided the unsettling elements often present in her work, focusing instead on metaphors of vision and transformation. She cites her use of the Bic pen as a tool for naturalness and spontaneity. Regarding Italian animation, Mori notes that while talented auteurs exist, the industry struggles due to lack of linear funding and limited theatrical distribution, often forcing her to produce work abroad, particularly in France.
