Virginia Distillery Co. Launches Split Barrel Project Blending Bourbon and Single Malt

other · 2026-05-20

Virginia Distillery Co. has released Split Barrel Project #1, a blend of 50% sourced Kentucky bourbon from Bardstown Bourbon Company and 50% in-house American single malt. The bourbon is made from 75% corn, 15% rye, and 10% malted barley, aged four years in new charred oak. The single malt uses 100% malted barley, aged five years in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. Founded by George Moore in 2011, the distillery is now run by his son Gareth. The release aims to introduce bourbon drinkers to American single malt, a category that received a legal definition from the TTB in 2022 after lobbying by the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission. Gareth Moore stated the project creates a gateway into American single malt. The whiskey is 90 proof, priced at $45 SRP, available at select retailers and the distillery. Future editions will involve collaborations with other distilleries.
