Virgilio Sieni's Cantieri Culturali Isolotto: Art-Led Urban Regeneration in Florence

The sixth edition of Cantieri Culturali Isolotto, curated by dancer and choreographer Virgilio Sieni, took place in the Isolotto district of Florence. The festival featured performances, workshops, and community projects aimed at regenerating public spaces through participatory art. A key event was 'Fronda,' a duet between blind dancer Giuseppe Comuniello and cellist Naomi Berrill performed under a cedar tree in Piazza dei Tigli. The festival also saw the inauguration of the Scuola di piccola falegnameria, led by artist Viola Tortoli Bartoli, where children create collective artworks from recycled materials. A site-specific installation, 'Sentiero d’oro,' connects the Galleria Isolotto to the Giardino delle Erbacce, an unplanned green space slated for future regeneration. Plans include building a modular greenhouse for interdisciplinary activities, modeled on the Germinale project in Florence's Le Piagge district by architects Elena Barthel and Anna Lisa Pecoriello. The festival is part of the Estate Fiorentina program and is organized by Sieni's Centro Nazionale di Produzione della Danza.
