Viola Morini: Gen Z Artist on DIY Practice and Feminist Literature
Viola Morini (born 1997, Milan) is an emerging Italian artist who graduated in Painting from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera. Her first group show was Baitball 01 in 2020, curated by Stefania Delorenzo in collaboration with Like Little disaster. In 2021, she had a two-person exhibition with Giacomo Giannantonio (born 1998, Rome) at Dimora Artica in Milan titled No Child Left Behind, which she describes as a successful attempt to create an environment rather than just an artwork. Morini uses easily found materials and a DIY approach, which she says empowers her and allows viewers to connect with authentic materials. She works slowly, with breaks, and feels a need for detachment after completing a piece. She is influenced by feminist literature and the work of Riccardo Benassi. Currently, she collaborates with the emerging independent space Pianeta Fresco. With Giannantonio, she is creating a sculpture that will serve as a gazebo for a project by Pianeta Fresco curated by Giorgia Ori. Morini expresses concerns about toxic dynamics in the art world and aims to maintain boundaries for her mental health. She hopes to live from her art and create an experimental space for multidisciplinary forms and utopian experiments with non-hierarchical knowledge.
