Vinicio Capossela's Dante Performance on Burri's Cretto in Gibellina

On August 7, 2021, Italian singer-songwriter Vinicio Capossela performed his Dante-inspired show 'La Bestiale Comedìa' on Alberto Burri's 'Grande Cretto' in Gibellina, Sicily. The performance was part of the 'Laboratorio Dante' project by Fondazione Orestaidi, celebrating the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death. Capossela, accompanied by musicians Vincenzo Vasi and Raffaele Tiseo, reinterpreted Dante's Inferno, particularly Canto XII, drawing parallels between the earthquake that created the ruin in Dante's text and the 1968 Belice earthquake that destroyed Gibellina. The show blended music, poetry, and theatrical elements, referencing themes of love, death, and rebirth. Capossela also paid homage to Franco Battiato and other poets, using the Cretto as a symbolic stage for a journey through Dante's cosmology. The event included performances by choreographer Virgilio Sieni and actor Sergio Rubini on preceding days.
