Vincenzo Paonessa's Cartographic Poetics at Palazzo Brancaccio
Over one hundred works by Vincenzo Paonessa (born 1970, Gimigliano) are on view at Spazio Africano – già Biblioteca in Palazzo Brancaccio, Rome, in the exhibition 'Mappe e Tracce', curated by Paola Artoni and produced by NUMM Contemporary Art. The show spans more than thirty years of the Calabrian artist's research, reworking old school maps and found materials into imaginary geographies that critique borders and evoke memory. A new series, 'Spazi Neutri', presents rare works on large antique school maps, where painterly gestures create meditative, abstract spaces. Critic Andrea Contin describes Paonessa's practice as operating in a 'neutral threshold of the dreamer', where memory transforms rather than conserves. The exhibition runs at Palazzo Brancaccio, Rome.
