Vincenzo Agnetti and Tomaso Binga's Typewriter Art at Galleria Erica Ravenna
At Galleria Erica Ravenna in Rome, works by Vincenzo Agnetti and Tomaso Binga are juxtaposed for the third time, exploring language and technology through altered typewriters. Agnetti's "La Macchina Drogata" (1969) modified an Olivetti Divisumma 14 calculator by replacing numbers with letters, creating a performative device that produced nonsensical text. Binga's "Dattilocodici" (1978) used an Olivetti Lettera 32, generating accidental letter overlaps that evoke ancient symbols and Japanese ideograms. Both artists subvert the machine's rationality to critique consumer society and assert human creativity. The exhibition includes previously unseen works and runs currently in Rome. Curator Giuseppe Garrera notes that Binga's works transform writing into art through joyful disobedience of typing rules. The pairing began in 2023 and continued at Miart23.
