Vincent Bioulès Returns to Marseille at Galerie Béa-Ba

Galerie Béa-Ba in Marseille presents 'Vincent Bioulès, Marseille, à nouveau,' an exhibition running from October 18 to December 8, 2018. The show features paintings by the French artist, born in 1938, who previously worked in Marseille and produced numerous canvases during his stays. The exhibition includes works such as 'Le Mistral 2' (130 x 195 cm), two nearly identical large blue paintings with a jetty, and 'Fort Saint-Jean' (130 x 162 cm) from 2018, along with a smaller piece resembling a duel. Bioulès draws on art history, citing Matisse's cut-outs as an influence, and states, 'I think we have the right to draw from art history with total freedom' and 'Painting is loving and taking into account the heritage of painting.' He believes revolution requires persistent engagement with traditional genres. The paintings explore the relationship between drawing and color, with no hierarchy between them. Bioulès repeats subjects because he feels he hasn't exhausted them, aiming to experience the renewed act of painting. The works feature thick brushstrokes, blurred details, and earthy tones, with some pieces showing an urgent, rebellious touch. The exhibition includes a small cover piece titled 'Marseille' (16.6 x 22 cm).
