VIMA Art Fair Launches in Limassol as Cyprus's First International Contemporary Art Fair
The inaugural VIMA Art Fair took place in Limassol, Cyprus, from 16 to 18 May, marking the country's first international contemporary art event. Founded by Lara Kotreleva, Edgar Gadzhiev, and Nadezhda Zinovskaya, the fair showcased 27 galleries and over 100 artists from more than 20 nations, with the goal of establishing Cyprus as a cultural nexus linking Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. A local expert committee, featuring Alexandros Diogenous, Tasos Stylianou, and Andre Zivanari, ensured a blend of global aspirations and local heritage. The curatorial project, The Posterity of the Sun, led by Paris-based Ludovic Delalande, displayed works from 16 artists and a writer in a transformed warehouse. Participating galleries included Cypriot spaces like Alpha C.K. Art Gallery and international ones such as Callirrhoë from Athens. While sales results are still unknown, the fair's public program featured performances like Leontios Toumpouris's Skipping Time, promoting cultural exchange. The name VIMA, meaning 'step' or 'platform', symbolizes its mission to connect the Mediterranean art scene.
