Vilmos Huszár Exhibition at Stadsmuseum Harderwijk Explores His Role in De Stijl
A small but comprehensive exhibition at the Stadsmuseum Harderwijk in the Netherlands presents forty works, drawings, and notebooks by Vilmos Huszár (Budapest, 1884 – Hierden, 1960), a founding member of the De Stijl movement. The show, titled 'Huszár van De Stijl,' runs until January 7, 2018. Huszár, who settled in the Netherlands in 1905, was the most traditionalist of the avant-garde group that included Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. Unlike Mondrian's orthodoxy of orthogonal lines, Huszár introduced diagonal lines and triangles to maintain a link with objective reality. He never abandoned figurative painting, as seen in works like 'Case a Spa' (1920) and 'Due donne' (1960). Trained at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Budapest, he was influenced by Cézanne's impressionism and constructivism, and traveled to Paris, Munich, and London to study cubist and futurist avant-gardes. His career alternated between figuration and experimentation, including design. The exhibition is curated by Niccolò Lucarelli.
