Villa Romana turns 120: Florence exhibition traces its history

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Museo Novecento in Florence, under the direction of Sergio Risaliti, is showcasing Italy's inaugural institutional exhibition focused on Villa Romana, established in 1905 by Max Klinger. Curated by Elena Agudio, Mistura Allison, and Eva Francioli, this exhibition commemorates the 120th anniversary of the institution. Located in a neoclassical villa on via Senese, Villa Romana has welcomed notable artists such as Georg Kolbe, Max Beckmann, and Käthe Kollwitz. The exhibition features Klinger's 1895 artwork "Il bacio della sirena" along with eight of his pieces. Additionally, it includes works by Kollwitz, Barlach, Pechstein, and Baselitz, as well as Anna Oppermann's Ensembles and contributions from Karin Sander and Amelie von Wulffen, exploring themes of artistic freedom and cultural policy.
