Villa Rezzola's English Garden Reopens in Lerici After Restoration

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The FAI has reopened the English garden of Villa Rezzola in Lerici, Liguria, following a restoration funded by PNRR and private contributions totaling over 3.3 million euros. The garden, part of a four-hectare park overlooking the Gulf of Poets, was originally shaped by English owners the Cochrane family in the early 20th century. The 17-month restoration involved over 20 specialists and 50 skilled workers, focusing on clearing overgrown belvederes, restoring water systems, and installing night lighting by designer marionanni. Visitors can now explore ficus repens walls, camphor, olive, and citrus trees, along with fountains, greenhouses, and a 150-meter wisteria pergola. The villa's history includes use as a military command during WWII by Italian and German forces. The property was bequeathed to FAI in 2020 by Maria Adele Carnevale. New cultural services include a ticket shop, multimedia guides, podcasts, and an interactive map. Future plans aim to restore the entire park and villa. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am–6pm, €10.
