Villa Piccolo Foundation in Sicily faces closure due to funding cuts

The Fondazione Piccolo in Capo d'Orlando, Sicily, risks closure due to drastic cuts in regional funding. Established in 1972 by the Piccolo di Calanovella barons—poet Lucio, painter-photographer Casimiro, and botanist Agata Giovanna—the foundation operates Villa Piccolo, a museum and cultural center set in a 20-hectare park. The museum houses the family's collections, including botanical specimens, paintings, photographs, and letters from Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, cousin of the Piccolos. Funding under regional law 51/1995 once provided about €160,000 annually but dropped to zero between 2006 and 2009; recent years have seen only tens of thousands of euros, with €36,000 allocated for 2012 still unpaid. The foundation also awaits reimbursement of €70,000 for events in the Circuito del Mito festival, now under investigation for mismanagement. The municipality of Capo d'Orlando and the Province of Messina have provided no support, while the province uses a wing of the villa rent-free for a wine shop. The foundation now employs only two staff—an administrator and a caretaker—and struggles with mortgage costs. Board member Alberto Samonà criticizes the regional government, urging President Rosario Crocetta and new Assessor Franco Battiato to act, suggesting that politically connected entities received funds while the foundation was left with 'alms.' The crisis reflects broader issues in Italian cultural funding amid austerity.
